Are you looking for a cool gamertag for Xbox Live?

Why does a cool Xbox Live gamertag matter?
Oh, come on, if you’re here you already know. For your friends, it’ll be what they call you; for your opponents, it’ll be what they taunt you with. But, finding a great gamertag is really difficult.

Here is how we rank gamertags:
The Best Gamertags
The best gamertags – the coolest and most original – are simple and relevant. If you watch TwitchTV, where some of Xbox’s top players stream their games to the public, the names that always stand out are the ones that are simple but awesome. For example, what about the names: Predator? Acid? King? Boxer?

When was the last time you were in a game with someone and saw that they had an original and simple Xbox name? Without all of the numbers or spaces? Odds are that it’s been a long time. These gamertags are rare and when you see them, they stand out.

What do all of these names have in common? They’re real words.

The Good Gamertags
If you can’t get an original gamertag, the next best step is to at least do something classy. The basic rules behind a good gamertag are the same as a great gamertag but without constraining ourselves to being as simple. The hard part for all of this is that a lot of this requires creativity. An example of a good gamertag could be something like: P for Python or Ramb0 (with a zero).

The ‘Meh’ Gamertags
If you’ve had a gamertag for a long-time or there is a word or phrase that you really like, even the good variations may be taken. Gamertags like Ghost or Killer fall into this category. There are so many variations that are already taken. For these names, you may need to think about how to creatively reproduce your name. The best way is to think about adding an ‘o’ or an ‘x’ before and after the name – to keep the symmetry consistent. You can also try using a capital ‘I’ or a lowercase l to frame the name. However, different games use different fonts to display the gamertags so you can never be sure of how it will look.

The Bad Gamertags
The next tier down, you’ve given up on all of the above and now just want a name. Say you choose something like: II Butt3rfing3r II. Now, these names are very similar to the OK names, but they lack the consideration of usability. In this example, you realize all of your friends (and opponents) are going to refer to you as ‘Butt,’ right?

Although, I guess that may actually improve the name for some people.

The Unoriginal Gamertags
Using your first initial and the last four digits of your social security number are a great example of this. For a lot of people, all of their previous usernames have revolved around work or school, and when they get on Xbox Live, they choose a name like jj3820.

The Worst Gamertags
The worst gamertags are incomprehensible and use a combination of alternating caps, numbers, and poor framing. For example: xXzR3dicuLuZZZ or iTz QulcKSc0p3Z. There are so many more examples, but I think that you get the point.
